Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Health Talks

African-American Health: Addressing Disparities by Shifting Lifestyles Without Relinquishing Culture

The African-American community experiences significant disparities with chronic health conditions, and unequal access to healthy foods and preventive screenings. This is evident by the CDC that has noted that the top causes of death among African-Americans are heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The connection between physical health and food choices is well known. Therefore, to combat this trend, good nutrition and physical activity can help prevent these conditions, leading to a healthier life. The aim of this session is to identify health risks and their causes (unequal access to healthy foods/prevention screenings, minority stress, and cultural influences) associated in the Black community; provide psychoeducation on the connection between lifestyle choices and chronic health conditions; and learn behavioral strategies of easy food swaps, ways to incorporate physical activity, and tips to maintain healthy lifestyle choices during the holiday season.
