Description of what is in the photo.

September marks a fresh start for many organizations as teams return from summer breaks and Q4 planning begins. It's the perfect time to ask: What kind of work culture are we cultivating?

At Morning Crane, along with our collaboration with FitPros, we've witnessed firsthand how integrating Qigong and Tai Chi into the workplace doesn't just improve individual wellness—it transforms entire organizational cultures.

Beyond the Ping Pong Table: Real Wellness at Work

We've worked with organizations ranging from government agencies to Silicon Valley startups to Fortune 500 corporations, and the story is always the same: traditional wellness perks fall short because they don't address the root causes of workplace stress.

However, Qigong and Tai Chi offer something different—practices that build resilience from the inside out while fostering genuine connection between colleagues.

What Are Qigong and Tai Chi?

For those unfamiliar with these ancient practices, Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) literally means “energy practice” and combines gentle movements, breathing techniques, and meditation to promote physical and emotional well-being.

Tai Chi, often called “meditation in motion,” is a flowing sequence of slow, graceful movements that originated as a martial art but has evolved into a powerful wellness practice. Both modalities are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and focus on cultivating and balancing your body’s natural energy (qi or chi).

What makes them perfect for workplace settings is their accessibility—no special equipment is needed, movements can be adapted for any fitness level, and sessions can be as short as five minutes or as long as an hour. Unlike high-intensity workouts that might leave employees sweaty or exhausted, these practices leave participants feeling energized, centered, and mentally clear.

The Science of Workplace Transformation

When we introduced weekly Qigong sessions at a tech company in San Jose, absenteeism dropped 20% within six months. But the real magic happened in the subtle shifts: team members started listening more deeply in meetings, conflicts resolved more easily, and that chronic "Monday morning dread" began lifting.

Why? Because these ancient practices work on multiple levels simultaneously:

Stress Reduction That Actually Sticks

Unlike quick-fix stress management techniques, Qigong trains your nervous system to return to calm naturally. When colleagues practice together, they create what we call collective coherence—a shared state of centeredness that influences the entire workplace environment.

Enhanced Communication and Emotional Intelligence

Tai Chi’s partner exercises and Qigong’s mindful awareness naturally develop empathy and non-verbal communication skills. Teams that practice together report better collaboration, fewer misunderstandings, and more creative problem-solving.

Sustainable Energy Throughout the Day

Instead of the caffeine-crash cycle, these practices generate lasting vitality. The 2 PM energy slump disappears when your team knows how to cultivate qi (life force energy) rather than just consuming it.

Real Results from Real Organizations

Here’s how these principles have played out in our real-world collaborations:

Maria Shriver recognized Chris as one of her Architects of Change and featured him regularly on MariaShriver.com, stating:

“Based on my positive experience with Chris as a healthcare professional and master healer, I invited Chris to introduce Qigong to the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. He hosted a series of onsite Qigong workshops focused on helping athletes and their families decrease stress while increasing focus and performance.”

Billy Blanks, creator of Tae Bo®, collaborated with us during Live Whole Health Week at the Fresno VA Medical Center, where we reached over 100 participants both in-person and online. Billy shared:

“Having a longstanding relationship with Chris, who embodies the teachings of Christ, I have witnessed the powerful effects of Qigong practices he incorporates into his teachings following my Tae Bo® classes. The immediate transformation and enhancement of both physical and mental well-being in his students are truly remarkable.”

The VA Fresno Medical Center partnership demonstrates how workplace wellness can extend beyond traditional employee benefits. During Live Whole Health Week, we offered two transformative sessions—"Qigong for Emotional Well-Being" and "Heal Neck and Back Pain Yourself"—to veterans, VA staff, and the general public.

The program’s success lies in its alignment with the VA’s Whole Health approach, focusing on what matters most to veterans and staff: their comfort, well-being, and ability to take charge of their own health.

The impact was immediate and measurable:

  • Over 100 participants engaged across in-person and online formats

  • Veterans and staff reported practical tools they could use immediately

  • The sessions provided sustainable wellness practices that participants could incorporate into daily routines

  • No prior experience was necessary, making the program accessible to all fitness levels

This collaboration showcases how Qigong and Tai Chi can be seamlessly integrated into existing organizational wellness frameworks, creating cultures where healing and self-care become a natural part of the work environment.

Simple Practices, Profound Impact

The 5-Minute Team Reset

Start meetings with one minute of intention-setting and focused breathing. It sounds simple, but this practice alone can shift a tense team dynamic into collaborative flow.

Lunchtime Energy Breaks

Replace scrolling through phones with a gentle 20-minute Tai Chi session. Teams return to afternoon work refreshed rather than depleted.

Walking Meditation Meetings

For appropriate discussions, try slow, mindful walking while talking. The gentle movement often unlocks creative solutions that sitting in conference rooms never could.

Enhancing Performance and Creative Flow

The most successful workplace wellness programs we’ve implemented share one quality: they directly enhance cognitive function and creative problem-solving abilities.

When teams practice Qigong together, something remarkable happens—mental fog clears, focus sharpens, and innovative solutions emerge naturally. The slow, mindful movements combined with conscious breathing increase blood flow to the brain while activating the parasympathetic nervous system, creating optimal conditions for higher-level thinking.

Teams report breakthrough moments during or immediately after sessions, as the practices quiet the mental chatter that often blocks creative insights.

Unlike caffeine or other stimulants that provide temporary cognitive boosts followed by crashes, these ancient practices sustainably enhance mental clarity, improve decision-making capacity, and foster the relaxed alertness that’s essential for innovation and strategic thinking.

Your Next Step: Starting Small, Thinking Big

You don’t need a complete cultural overhaul to begin. Start with one 20-minute session per week. Watch how it ripples through your organization. We’ve seen single departments transform entire company cultures simply by modeling what centered, collaborative work looks like.

This September, consider: What if your workplace became a place where people actually wanted to spend their time?

Where Monday mornings brought enthusiasm instead of exhaustion?

Where teams supported each other’s well-being as naturally as they shared project updates?

The ancient wisdom of Qigong and Tai Chi holds keys to the daily workplace challenges we all face. The question isn’t whether these practices work—it’s whether you’re ready to implement them.
